Why Don’t You Self-Publish?
I have given it some consideration but I think it’s a little beyond my means right now. It isn’t just the cost of printing off a few thousand books that’s the issue either; there’s also distribution and marketing to consider. I simply don’t have ten or twenty grand lying around to pay for it all.
Additionally, I have since learned that this would be a terrible mistake. Self-publishing, Print on Demand, electronic book publishing, etc. may have their uses but in the fiction market they are career killers. Self-published works don’t have the same marketing and distribution that a major publishing house does and will in all likelihood cost me more money than I’ll ever earn back. Way more. Plus, once you’ve self-published the odds of a major publishing house picking up your work at a later date are minuscule. Simply put, self-publishing a fiction novel is almost a guaranteed ticket to failure and a boatload of debt. If I’m ever going to get published, I’m going to do it right by going through an agent and a publishing house.
